Misconceptions About Orthodontics

While everyone understands that a dentist takes care of teeth, not everyone is aware of what an orthodontist does. This confusion sometimes leads to misunderstandings about what Our offices does for our patients and how exactly our team can help them. Let’s take a closer look at a couple of the myths and misconceptions about orthodontics.

Perhaps the biggest misconception about the orthodontist is that we’re just like your family dentist. The truth is, we’re actually very different. While it’s true that both orthodontists and dentists care about helping you enjoy a lifetime of good dental and oral health, we go about achieving this goal in different ways. For instance, if you need to have a cavity filled, you probably won’t make an appointment to see me. Dentists are the health professionals to see if you’re concerned about a cavity or need a filling. A dentist can also treat gum disease, tooth decay, toothaches, and other common oral health problems.

People see an orthodontist for very particular services. Most of the patients we see on a daily basis are here because they have braces, or they need to be fitted with braces or another form of tooth-straightening device. In other words, they consult an orthodontist when they are concerned about the alignment of their teeth. As a child grows up, his or her teeth may come in crooked. This can happen for a number of reasons, so it’s important for an orthodontist to take a look at a child’s teeth at about seven years of age. At that age, it’s possible to detect any problems that have not become too advanced to treat easily. Your family dentist may also refer your child to an orthodontist once the adult teeth have fully grown in.

Another common misconception about orthodontists is that we only treat children. It’s true that when you visit an orthodontic clinic you’re apt to see a lot of young kids, but you’ll also see teenagers, college students, and adults. Because crooked teeth can be caused by a number of different factors, it’s entirely possible for someone to require orthodontic treatment at any age.

If you want to know more about the practice of orthodontics or what your orthodontist can do for you, then simply ask our team. It’s best to get answers to your specific questions directly from the person who will be treating you. While you’re sure to find Internet resources helpful, there really is no substitute for the personal attention you’ll get during your appointment.

INVISALIGN Beirut lebanon

Invisalign

Invisalign, Invisalign teen, Invisalign Lite, Invisalign I7, Invisalign Vivera Invisalign Orthodontist in Beirut-Lebanon
Invisalign ® Invisible Braces for Adults and Teens
Since Invisalign is nearly invisible, you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. Dr. Bardawil is a certified Invisalign treatment provider. He has treated many cases with this leading edge appliance system.
Invisalign ® and Invisalign Teen ®:
  • is an invisible way to straighten teeth. We prescribe a series of clear removable aligners to straighten your teeth without any metal wires or brackets.
  • aligners are worn sequentially, by the patient, to promote extensive tooth movements. Results are accomplished little by little, week by week, until your teeth are straightened to the final position prescribed on the upper and/or lower arches.
  • aligners are made through a combination of orthodontic expertise and 3-D computer imaging technology.
  • is for adults with mild to moderate crowding or spacing.
  • is for teens with mostly permanent teeth. Teen aligners include a compliance indicator to report the amount of time the aligners are worn.
  • is removable so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. You also can brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene.
  • is more comfortable to wear because there is no metal to cause mouth irritation.

How it works
Invisalign uses the latest 3-D computer technology to create your customized aligners. First, we work with you here in our office to determine what needs to be corrected. Then, we take impressions of your teeth. Next, we send Invisalign your impressions and customized treatment plan. Invisalign uses advanced computer technology to finely calibrate a sequence of aligners. Depending on the treatment plan we develop, this could mean as few as 10 or as many as 30 aligners.
You'll wear each aligner for about two weeks, taking it out for eating, brushing, and flossing. As you replace each aligner with the next, your teeth gradually move into the final alignment prescribed by the doctor. Office visits are required approximately every ten to twelve weeks.
Invisalign is not for everyone, but Dr. Bardawil can determine if it is right for you. As an Invisalign Provider, Dr. Bardawil  has been specially trained and certified to evaluate your eligibility for Invisalign and develop a customized treatment plan for your best result.
If you have been holding back on getting the smile you really want, give us a call. Find out about all of the innovative ways you can achieve a perfect smile.

Are all Clear aligners Similar to Invisalign?

Are All Clear aligners Similar to Invisalign?
BY Dr.George Bardawil

                                                                                            Beirut-Lebanon

Clear aligner therapies have become very popular with Invisalign being the most widely known. This is not just the result of good marketing. Here are 5 additional reasons why Invisalign is the CLEAR choice at the top over all current aligners available on the market!
  1. The widest body of clinical research and proven performance and proven results.
  2. The best (patented) diagnostic and 3D treatment planning tools for dentist and patient.
  3. The best resources and expert support available.
  4. The best (patented) materials including non-bisphenol-A (NON BPA) medical grade polyurethane trays.
  5. The best certification training and on-going continuing education programs for Orthodontists.
For these reasons and others, I would choose an Invisalign  provider as they do NOT all use the same techniques and materials. Non-Invisalign provider may entice you by saying it is the same stuff but cheaper, but remember my favorite words of wisdom, "Good dentistry may be expensive, but not as expensive as bad dentistry!"

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Many people think that Teeth Whitening is harmful for the teeth, because it removes a layer of teeth enamel!!! This idea is completely wrong, & all people spread this wrong idea without verifying it. Teeth Whitening depends on a material ca...lled Hydrogen Peroxide & it is a chemical material, in addition to other chemical materials. The function of whitening material is to penetrates into teeth enamel, & oxidizes the discoloration material which results in whitening the teeth. Teeth Whitening material is even safer than some tooth paste we use daily!!! Because tooth paste contains a very small percentage of abrasive material which removes plaque from teeth and stains, but whitening material is completely free of abrasive materials.

Patient question: “What is malocclusion?”

This is a question we hear all the time. Malocclusion, or what we call having a “bad bite,” is the improper alignment of teeth and/or jaws. When your teeth and jaws are not properly aligned, it may impact your bite, the ability to properly care for your teeth, your gum tissue health and even your appearance. Most people will experience some degree of malocclusion, but it generally is not severe enough to require orthodontic treatment. If your malocclusion is serious enough, however, treatment may be necessary to correct the issue.
Untreated malocclusion can lead undesirable mouth problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, or chipped and cracked teeth. The most common solution for malocclusion, of course, is orthodontic treatment. The actual course of treatment, including the length of time you will require braces, will be determined by severity of your malocclusion. The goal of your treatment is to move your teeth into the proper position and correct any misalignment in the jaw.
We use the most advanced technology in the field in order to ensure that you receive the best possible results. If you have any questions about malocclusion or about starting your orthodontic treatment, please call our office!

How Much Do I Wear My Invisalign

Dr.george bardawil -ORTHODONTIST www.drgeorgebardawil.com, info@drgeorgebardawil.com, Invisalign premier provider, speciality clinics center, st maamari,12th floor hamra, beirut lebanon Hamra clinic 961-1-747644 Fanar clinic 961-1-873718 mobile 961-3-542724

Patients that are moving teeth and are wearing Invisalign appliances should wear their aligners anywhere from 23-22 hours everyday to get the best optimal wear.

This amounts to taking them out only to eat or to brush.  One nice thing about Invisalign though is if you have a special occasion or a meeting or even photo shoot you can take them out and just make up the time you lost at the end of your two week process.

Certain days you may not want to risk losing them so you can just keep them in a safe place and just add a day at the end.  The one thing that you must always do is wear them for the full two weeks.  Each aligner is only designed to do 100% of its job it can not do anymore than that so if you aren't wearing your aligners enough you will build an in correction into your future aligners.

“I’m an adult – is orthodontic treatment right for me?”

Good question! In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely, we think—to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, and we know that adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful and healthy smile.

If you are still apprehensive about getting braces as an adult, a good option for straightening your teeth might be Invisalign, which uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you’re wearing. If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, we would love to have you visit for an initial consultation! Please give us a call to set one up!

What CAN Invisalign treat?

This is a GREAT question Dr.Bardawil is often asked. And  an important one. Teeth do not know what is pushing on them. Teeth to move need  3 Factors 1. Force 2.Time 3. Space . Teeth simply respond to constant pressure over a period of time. So Invisalign aligners (clear plastic trays that are worn) have the same effect wires and braces have on teeth. If someone tells you otherwise,  simply untrue. At Our Office in Fanar and Hamra , we treat spaced teeth, crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, open bites (where the front teeth do not touch), and even surgical cases! And I will be posting these treated cases on my blog and on our Facebook fan page over the coming years. Some of the finished case are already posted on our webstite . You will see for yourself that just because someone who is not comfortable treating with Invisalign says that can not be done with Invisalign, does not mean it can not be done. Experience matters!

Snoring -Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea

Are you drowsy during the day with no explanation? Do you snore loudly, or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? If so, you may be one of more than twelve million Americans affected by sleep apnea.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops periodically during sleep, as many as 20-30 times per hour. ("Apnea" is the Greek word for "without breath.") If you suffer from sleep apnea, each time your breathing stops, the resulting lack of oxygen alerts your brain, which temporarily wakes you up to restart proper breathing. Because the time spent awake is so brief, most people with sleep apnea don't remember it - and many think they are getting a good night's sleep. However, the constant wake-sleep-wake-sleep cycle precludes the deep sleep that refreshes the body, and sufferers are frequently drowsy during the day.

What are the signs of sleep apnea?

The following symptoms can indicate the presence of sleep apnea. If you notice one or more of these, give us a call, and we can refer you to a sleep apnea specialist.
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • Loud snoring at night
  • Waking up at night short of breath
  • Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
  • Headaches upon waking in the morning
  • Falling asleep unintentionally during the day
  • Extreme drowsiness throughout the day

What are risk factors for sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is more common in males than females, and more common in older adults (40 and up) than younger adults and children. However, anyone – regardless of gender or age – can suffer from sleep apnea. Other risk factors include obesity, smoking, drinking, use of sedatives or tranquilizers, high blood pressure, and family history. Central sleep apnea strikes most often in people with heart disorders, neuromuscular disorders, strokes, or brain tumors. It is also more common in males.

Is sleep apnea dangerous?

Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem and if left untreated can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. The ongoing state of fatigue caused by sleep apnea can lead to problems at work or school, as well as danger when operating cars or other heavy machinery. Sleep apnea can also cause complications with medication or surgery: sedation by anesthesia can be risky, as can lying flat in bed after an operation. If you know or suspect you suffer from sleep apnea, alert any doctors who prescribe medication or advise surgery.

How is sleep apnea treated?

Treatments range widely and depend on the severity of the problem and the type of apnea. Basic treatment can be behavioral - for instance, patients are instructed to lose weight, stop smoking, or sleep on their sides instead of on their backs. Beyond that, oral devices can be used to position the mouth in such a way that prevents throat blockage. In more severe cases, surgery may be the best option.
Give us a call  , and we can refer you to a sleep apnea specialist. The specialist may recommend a "sleep study" to diagnose the precise extent of the problem, and can prescribe appropriate treatment. Depending on your situation, treatment may involve an oral device that we can custom-create for you.

What is Interproximal reduction?

Interproximal Reduction is it safe?

Interproximal reduction is the removal of a small amount of enamel from between the teeth to reduce their width. It’s a way to acquire additional space between adjacent teeth to create ideal tooth alignment during orthodontic treatment.  Interproximal reduction (IPR) is also known as reproximation, slenderizing, stripping, enamel reduction or selective reduction.
Some patients can be put off by the the idea of having to have their teeth slightly reshaped during orthodontic treatment to achieve ideal results.  But, there are many benefits to IPR.
I mentioned that IPR is a way of creating space to improve tooth alignment, but it is also used to improve the bite. I often use IPR to improve the appearance of the teeth for a better aesthetic appearance.  In certain cases, it alleviates the need for permanent tooth extractions, and many times, IPR can increase the stability of the teeth so that they are able to retain their placement over time.  Further, it can also reduce what we call black triangles. Black triangles are created when there is an absence of gum tissue between two teeth and it looks like there is a dark triangular space or hole between the teeth, even though the teeth may be properly aligned.
To execute interproximal reduction, I typically use either a diamond strip (looks like a slate strip or nail filing strip) and move it in between the teeth, or I’ll use a dental handpiece that looks like a small dremel.  IPR is not uncomfortable or painful for the patient in any way, but the sound of the file can cause some unease. It will not lead to and increase in tooth decay or gum disease.  The important thing to remember is that IPR is a very safe and effective way of achieving ideal tooth alignment.

Can your toothbrush make you sick?

The dreaded cold and flu season is here again! This raises a common question around our office: should your replace your toothbrush if you’ve been sick?
Since the flu is a viral infection, you develop antibodies once you’ve been infected. This helps prevent you from catching the same illness twice. Even for bacterial infections, the likelihood of becoming re-infected from your toothbrush is fairly slim for minor illnesses like the common cold. Also, toothpaste frequently contains antibacterial compounds, which further decreases your chances of re-infection.
The American Dental Association recommends the following tips for toothbrush care:
• Do not share toothbrushes, especially if you are sick
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!
We hope these tips help! Feel free to give us a call or ask us on Facebook if you have any

what can I eat with braces?

Patient Question: What Can I Eat With Braces?

We love when patients ask us that question! Now that you’re wearing braces, it’s just as important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen as you did before your orthodontic treatment began. The first few days in braces are going to be more difficult to eat than normal. There will be a slight discomfort when you first get your braces on, so the act of chewing will make it more painful.
Here are a few soft foods that do not require you to do much chewing and are easy to chew on when your teeth are sore.
Ice cream, yogurt, pudding, cool soups, Jell-O, scrambled eggs, cream of wheat, baked potatoes, soft cooked pasta, soup, bananas, cottage cheese, smoothies, macaroni and cheese, pancakes, soft cheeses, and milk are all foods you can eat safely without having to worry about pain or breaking your brackets.
Be sure to always check with us if you have questions about a particular food item by either giving us a call or asking us on Facebook!

Insignia braces

Insignia Braces, Beirut lebanon

For the best thing to happen to your smile since the toothbrush, look no further than Insignia braces. Jacksonville Beach patients can now experience this revolutionary technology first hand at Patel & Carden Breaches Orthodontics. What makes Insignia different? This system combines your doctor’s education, experience and insight with 3-D computer modeling to produce your prefect smile, before the braces are ever applied!
First, during your free consultation, your orthodontist will determine if Insignia braces are right for you. Next, precise impressions are taken of your teeth and bite which are then sent off to the Insignia Smile Lab. Your impressions are scanned and brought into a 3-D modeling system as a single upper and lower jaw. Then, through specialized software and a team of computer modeling technicians, each tooth is separated so it can be digitally manipulated. Your Orthodontist is then able to digitally place your custom brackets on each tooth, time-lapse your smile forward and see the results. Brackets are adjusted and this process is repeated until the desired result is achieved.
Your next meeting with the doctor will be to approve your new smile. The approval is sent back to the Insignia Smile Lab and your custom brackets are manufactured. This initial process can take up to 35% off the treatment time as fewer physical adjustments are necessary since they were done digitally. By taking the “guess work” out of orthodontics, you will achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, faster than you ever thought possible.
During the application process, each of your custom fit Insignia brackets are positioned on your teeth precisely where the computer model indicated. Once applied, the brackets are fitted with one-of-a-kind wires made especially for you based on the treatment plan set by your orthodontist. You will  in several weeks to check on the progress of the treatment. Many patients experience the complete movement of their teeth within the firvisit our officest 60 days.
So what are you waiting for? Get the smile you’ve always wanted, and deserved. It’s your time to shine with a new Insignia smile! The quickest, easiest way to effectively whiten your teeth is in-office treatment with Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed. Zoom WhiteSpeed is the only in-office system that has variable intensity setting so each treatment can be customized to maximize patient comfort. The system also includes desensitizers to help minimize sensitivity and protect your enamel. This dentist-supervised, in-office procedure is safe, effective and clinically proven to whiten up to eight shades—for a brighter, whiter smile in just one office visit.

Whitening at Home

Philips Zoom DayWhite and NiteWhite offer superior at-home whitening for a visibly whiter smile in one day and your whitest healthiest smile in seven to fourteen days. They are the only at-home whitening products to contain amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), which is clinically proven to reduce sensitivity, protect enamel and help improve the luster and smoothness of the teeth.
Zoom at-home whitening products are completely customizable. Your dentist creates a custom tray made just for you and can tailor the formula concentration and wear times to your sensitivity and lifestyle.

Managing Sensitivity

Everyone responds differently to whitening, and sensitivity is sometimes a side effect of whitening treatments. Ask your dental professional about using a sensitivity toothpaste like Fluoridex before and after your treatments. You can also use a mild desensitizer like Relief ACP in conjunction with your treatments to further minimize sensitivity.

Whitening Maintenance

To ensure your smile stays bright and white between treatments, try the Zoom Whitening Pen. With just two applications per day, this proprietary formula can help you maintain your white smile.
For continued stain removal and your healthiest teeth and gums, look for a power toothbrush like Sonicare DiamondClean or HealthyWhite. They’re proven to whiten teeth and remove plaque better than manual brushes.
